What do we mean by ‘culture’?
It’s a difficult term to define…
•We can mean the ideas and practices that people have in common
•It generally relates to things like books, art, food and music
•But can also be linked to religious or ethnic ideas
A quick overview
•Throughout the 1920s America underwent huge cultural changes.
•Silent cinema, sporting heroes and an increased interest in jazz created new social environments.
•One of the biggest changes can be seen in the rights for women – they gained the vote in 1920. More women began to adopt liberal lifestyles.
•However not all of these changes would be seen as being progressive…the development of religious fundamentalism meant that certain areas of America tried to keep out the ‘evils of city life’.
