Why was Gandhi murdered?

He believed in a united India at all costs. He was ready to accept M. A. Jinnah as prime minister of India, if this would mean India united.
• Gandhi did not follow some of the rules Hinduism. He mixed with Untouchables. He worked along side Muslims, and for some extreme Hindus this was going too far.
• He had went on a fast in August 1946 to try to stop Hindus attacking Muslims.
• Godse stated at his trial by saying that he believed that Gandhi favoured Muslims and that he had done too much to protect Muslims.
